PLACES TO VISIT

Pelling
Amongst the many beautiful places in Sikkim, Pelling is the most spectacular of them all. The entire range of Kanchendzonga can be seen from a very close distance and is in reality an amazing sight! There are quite a few pleasant sight-seeing places in and around .

Rabdantse Ruins
Rabdantse was the second Capital of Sikkim and was established in the late seventeenth century by the second Chogyal (King) of Sikkim. With frequent threats from Nepal in the eighteenth century, the King was compelled to shift the capital to Tumlong. Now the palace is in ruins and one has to trek about 2 kms. from the main road through a thick forest to reach it. It is preserved by the Archeological Survey of India and has been declared a historical monument.

Coronation Throne at YuksomKechopalri Lake
By road, the lake is 27 kms. from Pelling, the hiking trail is shorter and steeper taking about 4 and 1/2 hrs. It is a sacred lake and is surrounded by prayer flags and forested hills. The Sikkimese call it the wishing lake. Near the lake is a small Lepcha village of Tsojo. From Kechopalri it is possible to continue on foot to Yuksom.

Water Falls
There are a few beautiful and worth seeing waterfalls like the Kanchendzonga Falls, Phamrong Falls, Rimbi Falls and the Sangey.

Yuksom
The last motorable road to West Sikkim, 35 kms. away from Pelling, ends at Yuksom. It is a place of historical importance as because the first King was coronated here and was also the first Capital of Sikkim. The trek to Dzongri and Gloechala starts from here. The stone throne still exists and is a major attaraction. It is a peaceful village surrounded by cardamom plantations on the wide shelf above the valley of Rathong. The view of Mt. Pandim looks amazing from Yuksom.

Rinchenpong Mount Pandim Massif
A sleepy old village where it seems that time stood still for hundreds of years. This is the historical place where the first battle between the British and the Sikkimese was fought in 1863. The Sikkimese, unable to overpower the strong British army, tactfully poisoned them to death. Later the British came back and took possession of the entire village and made it their base. The Bungalow built by them still exists and is a masterpiece, within the beautiful setting of a pinetum forest. A 3 kms. trek from here takes one to Ressium hill, from where the sunrise over Kanchendzonga is a breathtaking sight. 20 Kms. away there is a famous hot spring called the Purchachu Reshi Hot Spring. The water of this spring is said to have great medicinal values because of the high sulphur content. During the winter months people come from all over and take long dips in the water for therauptic effects. The renowned Kahdosangphu cave or the Cave of Fairness is also situated here.
